Fox Beats Out Eye Network For Dubious Honor

There’s a new network winner for the 2007-08 television season but it comes with a bit of a dubious celebration.  For the first time, Fox will finish the season as the most-watched network overall, with 11.1 million viewers, beating out traditional leader CBS (10.5 million). However the writers strike, along with the rising popularity of DVRs and the increased availability of programming on multiple platforms, conspired to make this season the lowest-rated on record for the broadcasters. There was also a dearth of breakout hits, with no new show emerging as the biz's savior. Of course, the broadcasters have been losing audience share to cable for years, but this season saw the most troubling year-to-year declines yet. (CBS, which has won most weeks down the stretch, likely would have captured its sixth straight total-viewers crown if not for the writers strike.)

February 2009 Digital Television Transition

What do you do with 25 million USELESS television sets?  Effective February 17, 2009 all full-power U.S. television stations are required to discontinue use of their analog signals and operate in a digital-only environment.  According to a recent update from Nielsen, the number of ill-prepared TV households (sample homes that will have at least one set that won't work after the transition date) is now at 30% - that's nearly 25 million homes. Milwaukee and Salt Lake City had the highest % of completely unready households.  Nielsen is positioned to provide the industry with ongoing analyses about the digital readiness of U.S. households at the national level and in local markets as we approach the transition date.  For current updates visit:

Trivia Time

Can you guess what film won an Oscar twenty years after it was made?  Yes, you heard it right…it won an Oscar 20 years AFTER it was made.  Here’s a hint… the film won in the category of Original Dramatic Score and one of the arrangers was known for his full face make-up and outrageous antics. No, it’s not KISS frontman, Gene Simmons!  The 1972 Oscar went to Charles Chaplin, Ray Rasch and Larry Russell for the film ‘Limelight’. The twenty year old film was eligible for the Oscars that year because it had never been shown in Los Angeles prior to that time.  It was the only Oscar Chaplin ever won in a competitive category, although he did not come to the ceremony to collect it.  Rasch and Russell did not attend either, having died in 1964 and 1954, respectively.
